Paddington Sports Club
PSC celebrated its centenary in 2005. Its origins were in the Bowling Club that originally operated in the nearby Paddington Recreation Ground, and also a tennis court on our current site. In 1928, the current club house was opened and the move to our current site was completed. In 1935 the current Indoor Bowls pavilion was built. This 6-rink is believed to have been the largest freestanding structure of its type at the time, as it has no central supports. The fact that the Club has benefited from six-rink indoor and outdoor bowling greens from 1935 to date is one of the reasons for the great success that the Club has had over the years winning national bowling competitions. A number of national tennis tournaments have been held at the Club, and well-known tennis stars such as Sue Barker and Fred Perry have played here.
Over the years, some of the outdoor bowling greens became surplus to requirements and were converted into tennis courts. Other significant changes included the conversion of the first floor of the Club House in the mid-1990s into a Fitness centre.
Our late President (the actor Terry Rigby) compiled and wrote a centenary brochure in 2005 recording the development of the Club, its sporting successes, and the contributions of many club members during its first 100 years. This publication is available for purchase by anyone interested in the Club’s history.
